Openings Around the Sound

Apple Computers, Inc. opened in Bellevue Square and announced plans to open later this year in Seattle's University Village. The California-based company has 53 retail stores throughout the country. Each location features the company's line of Macintosh computers, digital cameras and other Apple products.

Bartell Drugs wrapped up its 113th anniversary celebration by opening a new location. The new 15,000-square-foot location, which is part of Westgate Village's new shopping development, gives the company a total of 52 stores throughout the Puget Sound region. The full-service Edmonds store includes a drive-thru pharmacy and much more.

Cold Stone Creamery opened in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood. The chain, which operates more than 400 stores nationwide, is slated to open 300 stores in 2003.

Crate & Barrel opened its second Puget Sound location. The two-level, 35,000-square-foot store joins a list of retailers with new stores in Seattle's University Village, including Fiorini Sports, Metropolitan Pilates, Starbucks and The Land of Nod.

Fry's Electronics began its foray into the Puget Sound region with a 152,000-square-foot store in Renton. The chain, which operates more than 20 stores nationwide, is well-known for its wide selection, low prices and dÈcor customized to the region the store resides in.

G.I. Joe's opened a new location in Seattle's Northgate area. The chain, which is well known throughout Washington and Oregon, currently operates more than 20 stores.

Jamba Juice, a chain offering fruit-smoothie and juice drinks, announced plans to open six new stores in the Puget Sound region by the end of this year. The San-Francisco-based company first entered the Seattle market four years ago and has since opened six stores — the most recent of which was in Seattle's University Village. The chain has 360 company and franchise operated locations in 24 states throughout the country.

Lowe's, a national home improvement retail chain, opened a new location in Mill Creek. The company operates 875 stores in 45 states throughout the country.

Purple Café and Wine Bar expanded to Kirkland. The company's initial store, which is located in Woodinville, opened with 40 seats about two years ago. The new, larger location, at 120 seats, allows its owners to broaden the scope of the restaurant's menu. Pastas will be added, as well as more appetizers and sandwiches. More than 50 wines are offered by the glass and more than 80 are offered by the bottle. A Purple Market will also be added to function as a retail mini-store offering packaged food, gifts, wine and other items.

The Children's Place announced plans to open 40 new stores during its current fiscal year. The company, which traditionally operates within mall environments, is considering open-air shopping centers, downtown locations and outlets for these new stores. The chain purchased 23 Au Coin des Petits stores in Canada last year.

Washington Energy Services opened a new store in Alderwood that offers customers an opportunity to enter a home-simulated environment and consult with a specialist about windows, doors, furnaces, air conditioners, fireplace inserts, air filtration systems and more. Additionally, the company will continue to offer its in-home consulting services.
